Scalp Shading for Thinning Hair & Visible Scalp
A No-Shave Solution for Men & Women Who Want the Appearance of Fuller, Denser Hair
Scalp Shading, also known as Scalp Painting, is a specialized scalp pigmentation technique designed to reduce the appearance of visible scalp between your existing hairs.
Ideal for thinning hair, widening parts, low-density areas, scalp scars and certain types of hair loss, Scalp Shading creates the visual appearance of greater density — without requiring you to shave your head.
Originally developed in Korea as Scalp Painting, this innovative technique is now available in Vancouver at Flawless SMP with Donna Fathi.
What Is Scalp Shading?
If your hair is still growing but your scalp is becoming increasingly visible, Scalp Shading may help camouflage the contrast.
Using specialized pigment and precise microneedling techniques, pigment is strategically placed between your existing hairs to reduce the contrast between the hair and scalp.
The result is the appearance of a fuller, denser head of hair while keeping your existing hairstyle.
Unlike traditional SMP treatments designed to replicate a closely shaved head, Scalp Shading does not require you to shave your hair.
Who Can Benefit From Scalp Shading?
Scalp Shading may be suitable for both women and men experiencing:
- Thinning hair and visible scalp
- Widening part lines
- Low density through the top or crown
- Receding areas where existing hair is still present
- Female-pattern thinning
- Certain forms of alopecia
- Scalp scars
- Hair transplant scars
- Clients who want a density treatment without shaving their existing hair
Important: Scalp Shading does not create new hair and is not a hair-growth treatment. Pigment is placed in areas where existing hair remains to create the illusion of greater density.
Scalp Shading vs. Scalp Micropigmentation
Both treatments use pigment to visually reduce the appearance of hair loss, but they’re designed for different needs.
Scalp Shading is ideal for clients who still have existing hair but can see too much scalp showing through. The goal is to camouflage the scalp between the hairs while keeping your hair.
Traditional Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) can replicate the appearance of individual shaved hair follicles and can be used to recreate or strengthen a hairline, camouflage bald areas and create the appearance of a closely shaved head.
For clients with longer hair and sufficient existing density, Scalp Shading provides a no-shave alternative.
Scalp Shading Pricing in Vancouver
Every scalp and level of thinning is different, so pricing depends on the size of the treatment area and the amount of density required.
Treatments range from $200–$1,100 per session.
A maximum of two sessions may be recommended, with sessions spaced approximately four weeks apart.
Each appointment also includes approximately 30 minutes of numbing time for your comfort.
A consultation allows me to examine your scalp, determine whether you’re a suitable candidate and provide an accurate treatment quote.

I’m Donna Fathi, founder of Flawless SMP.
I’ve worked professionally with hair since 1995 and have specialized in Scalp Micropigmentation since 2019. My background as a hairstylist and barber gives me a unique understanding of hairlines, density, growth patterns, thinning and how hair naturally sits on the scalp.
Today, I work with clients experiencing different forms of hair loss and also educate beauty professionals in Scalp Shading techniques.
My approach is never about making every scalp look the same. I assess your existing hair, density, skin and areas of concern to create a treatment designed specifically for you.
